It’s all about the month of May! What can I say? I am extremely thankful to have lived 33 years on this earth. I’ve never understood people that didn’t celebrate their birthday or didn’t get excited. I mean for goodness sake it’s the day you were born!
I think after being married early on in my 20s and having my son at 23, I had a lot of life experiences early on. Life brought me sadness and hurt, and then extreme happiness. When I wake up I thank God for waking me and my son up. And having to fall into a deep sleep with no worries because I know he’s there to protect us.
I always wonder why I overbook my schedule and end up doing so much in the month of May?! I mean, there’s Mother’s Day, five family members who have birthdays, spring baseball, track season, practices, and games. And that’s not even including fundraising events or personal time with close family and friends! Some may say it’s way too much in one season. But it’s been so amazing having to meet so many different parents from such a diverse group of backgrounds.
I’d say it’s been such an exciting month! For my birthday… I started the day with a nice healthy breakfast followed by a day at Burke Williams where I spent five hours at the spa followed by a deep tissue massage. Then later that day I picked up my son for baseball and had a meaningful dinner with my family.
I also had the pleasure of spending the day with my friend and mentor Neferteri Plessy. Honestly, that was my favorite part of the day. She’s like a sister that I never really had. Even though I had a large family and siblings growing up, I was raised by a tough single mother and two older brothers! Nef fills that void that was missing. We can have a laugh and talk about things in life, goals aspirations and it’s easy just to let loose and be free with her!
I am a firm believer that in order to grow in life you need to be around people that can laugh and cry with you at the same time. Although life gets tough it’s so important to smile. Why? Because it’s contagious and there are so many more reasons to smile than to frown. Especially when it comes to your birthday!
Cake, balloons, flowers, sparklers, fireworks. Best friends, mentors, coaches, and family are always a good idea! To some people, they may say that it’s not a big deal. Truthfully it is… because of people around you will appreciate you so much that they will celebrate just the way you want to. Because without your birthday you wouldn’t be on this earth, you wouldn’t be friends and be able to share moments like this with the people you love.
So when your birthday comes around remember to always smile and say ” it’s my birthday!”
