Single Moms Planet had the chance to sit down with author and mother Jaclyn Coy to discuss motherhood, business, and life as an author. Read the full interview and let us know your thoughts in the comments below, we love hearing from you.
Describe the moment when you were inspired to create Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster. I was on my way to Target – where every new Mom goes to kill some time in her day…and my baby fell asleep in the car. I parked at the gas station, grabbed a notebook, and wrote down the story of new motherhood that had been swirling in my head. It felt so good to finally get all my emotions out about what it feels like to parent. The highs and lows in one day are really intense, but the love is there through it all. I describe it as a mash-up of the book Love You Forever and Go the F**K to sleep. But don’t worry, the book is clean:)
How old are your kids? My daughter is seventeen months!
When did Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster launch? The book launched in Nov. 2016 – and is sold on Amazon. Gotta love that Prime two day shipping as a Mom!
What were you doing before you wrote Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster? I was, and still am, in a corporate marketing role. But I love when I get to say that I am also an author.
As a mother as well as the author of Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster, how do you make it all work? I really don’t make it ALL work. I look at what options I have on my plate and prioritize by what will make me happy in the long run, and which tasks will have the biggest impact on reaching my intended goals. From there, the other things are optional. It’s important to leave some free time. Without it, there is no flexibility, and you are a stressed mama. I love the quote – be stubborn about your goals, and flexible about the methods.
When did you first feel successful? It’s an ongoing process, but I really appreciated the Mom that stopped me at MommyCon last weekend and told me that I have to keep writing because she could relate so well to the book. I felt successful in that moment because the point of writing the book was to help parents feel like they aren’t alone in the way they feel and also to do it with a bit of humor and fun that a parent and child could enjoy together. So it’s exciting to hear when another parent gets that!
As a successful female entrepreneur, what are some ways that you want to teach your kids about “girl power”? I want to teach them to be creative problem solvers. There will be challenges and I want to make sure they learn that just because there is a challenge, that doesn’t mean they have to quit their dream. They might just need to create their own solution. I also don’t want them to shy away from creating big goals!
What’s your advice for moms who are looking to write their own book? Amazon offers some great resources through CreateSpace. But before you get lost in all the next steps or figuring out who will publish it, and would anyone buy it, just WRITE THE BOOK:) My Instagram handle is @finishthebook because for most people, just getting through that step is huge. What sacrifices have you made as a mom and entrepreneur to keep everything in balance? The book really had to become a hobby as well. I don’t have as much free time now as I did before I was a Mom. I work up early before work to write the drafts, edit, design, and market the book. Now I honestly do a lot of the marketing replies and social media posts as I’m rocking my baby to sleep. It’s quiet and peaceful, and I get a lot done during those twenty minutes.
If you could have lunch with any mogul/entrepreneur/author living or dead, who would it be and why? I would love to learn from any of the moguls on SharkTank. If I need a good laugh or girl power inspiration, I’d like to brunch with Chelsea Handler, Ellen, Melissa McCarthy, and Beyoncé. Tell me that wouldn’t be the most fun conversation of your life?!
Are there any new initiatives or events on the horizon for Love You to Pieces Beautiful Monster? I am working on the second book right now. Its a humorous story about all the things we do as parents to take care of our children, and how crazy we drive them! The launch is aimed at Nov. 2017 – but watch the Facebook page for all the updates!
